Just like any form of visual arts, designing a website requires careful planning or else, it might turn salad. Poorly designed websites can either annoy or cause your audience to make fun of your website. That’s why big companies are really allotting budget to make their websites presentable. To avoid humiliation from your viewers, you can follow basic guidelines for creating your website.

Color Scheme

You can start with creating website’s color scheme. Scheme means an arrangement therefore you need a pattern for your color combination. Simply spin you colorwheel and identify the elementary concepts of color harmony – analogous, complimentary, and tertiary. There are also books or online websites that provides detailed and elaborated color schemes. They even provide CYMK units to make the colors more specific.

Templates

Sneaking on other website template is not a form of cheating unless you’ll copy their design pixel by pixel. Templates serve as good references. You can get ideas from websites that provides ready-made templates. They even show live demo of their sample websites.

Navigation Bar

Your website must allow your visitors to navigate your website so they can easily find what they search for. A navigation bar contains hyperlinks that will enable visitors to jump from one page to another. It also categorize related topics. Majority set navigation bars on top located below the banner or on the left part of the body.

Background vs Text Color

Background color must be contrast with that of text. If the background is lightly colored, texts most of the time are black. But if you have a darkly colored background, text should be light. The color of text must not camouflage with background because it will be too hard for your readers to see the content.

Site Map

Site Map provides the outline of your website. It contains the sections of your website as well as the categories and subcategories. It directs your visitor on where to go or find what he needs. Site map is usually located on the corners of the websites, could be on top or bottom part and is designed small.

You can also add more features like flash banner, splash page, or animated characters. Try to make your website more inviting so to give your visitors a lot of reason to go back and see your website, if not to search for any information but at least to entertain themselves with your artistic website.
